One method often suggested is to measure the rate of  voltage drop
when the micro is "powered" from a capacitor.
If you know the capacitor value and the resistance of your voltmeter
(or just switch it in for measurements) then the current drain can be
easily resolved.

Or pre-calibrate the capacitor against a known load.
