The onboard regulator will get very hot if you use a 12V power supply.   It's possible you will be ok for a short time if the load driven by the SX is light.  It gets pretty hot with a 9 volt, I now use a 7.5 transformer. 

If I were you I would try to drop the voltage down with a power resistor or get a supply with a lower output voltage.
