I don't know if this has something to do with it,
but with VARITRONIX LCDs,
I found out I needed a 50 usec delay after the 4 init bytes,
before I could reliable give some commands.
This delay of 50 usec was not in the specs, nor the manufacturer did 
know about ;-)
