The resistor trick likely won't work for me, for the reasons alluded to above.

I'd never seen the "programming adapter"! That actually really makes life a lot easier for me. And nor did I know I could run the SX at 3.0vdc <= 50Mhz (20Mhz would be fine for me), so that actually completely solves my problem! :)
