For many years I thought it was somehow derived from 'amateur', but I recently found out that it is derived from the names of the founders of the hobby. I can't locate the source of the information now, so I can't tell you their names, and a recent ARRL Handbook doesn't seem to have the information. Perhaps the Web, in the person of RM, will provide.
