Did you stop to consider *why* things that work directly with the data
on the drive at a low level prefer to be the only software accessing
said drive? :) If you're serious about backups, it seems that the
minor inconvenience of getting everything to a consistent state would
be worth the enhanced reliability.  

Just playing some devil's advocate here - not saying that the lack of
convenience is really an acceptable solution a lot of the time.
