I did a little googling, and found some helpful links:
   http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/tran.htm
(explanations of transistor numbering and a few recommended substitutions)
   http://www.ee.washington.edu/circuit_archive/parts/cross.html
(transistor cross-reference database.  Type in transistor part number and
get equivalents.  Though their search might be too narrow for hobbiest use).
