A while back I had a similar problem with Win XP Pro. I discovered that I could boot the system with the distribution disk. Unfortunately, nothing I did helped with booting from the HD. That did allow a good backup since the system was otherwise working. The final fix was to reinstall windows and reload the system. No hardware problem was ever found. Since then I have installed a 250G HD in an external case via the USB. It stays powered down except to backup!
