I suspect you may find that the cause of the problem is some pernickity funny in how the cards were originally formatted. If you want to dig deeper into this, read the document that Microsoft has on dealing with FAT formatted media - it goes into right and wrong ways to format the media, and why the wrong ways are wrong, but points out that some manufacturers (specifically of floppies) did it that way because they did not understand the format. Look for fatgen103.pdf on the Microsoft website.
