His system is described here: http://philip.greenspun.com/panda/images The standard program for doing this is called "Gallery". It is the very definition of bloatware. (Of course, I've written an online photo management application too. It's a rite of passage for the aspiring web programmer.) About the text navigation thing, maybe you can find a Firefox extension to do what you want. I know in Mozilla, you can type the first letter of a link and press "Enter" to follow the link. If your links were named appropriately, this might meet your needs.
