Well, not only that. .NET is a platform abstraction framework. "Theoretically", someone could implement the framework for other platforms. Actually, someone already implemented it for linux (http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page) so applications you develop for .net can run in any platform that implements the framework (we've heard that before, don't we?). Yes, .net is similar to a java vm. While it does network aware projects very well, it is also capable of other types of projects as well.
