Data sheets are always worst case....and typically I have found most devices never reach that max worst case.  It depends on what its doing, what its connected to (driving).  I use those numbers for a power budget, making sure the supplies can provide that amount of power, and always assume and hope that the actual is much lower.  Its when its pulling more current....you have to wonder whats going on
