Umm, whether or not something like this is covered depends a lot on the specific warranty, doesn't it? I'm not necessarily suggesting that this defect might be covered for this device, but "NO manufacturer ... will cover damage like that under warranty" seems a bit strong. In any case, asking would not be "wrong"; not asking may be silly. It may not be a manufacturing defect, but it could easily be a design problem; for example if the screens break a lot, much more than reasonably could be expected.
