> On the talk-back last night, a self-described "computer engineer" > said that NZ is the only country in the world that says dub > dub dub. I find that hard to believe - but is it true ? I always hear it said as double-you double-you double-you. But mostly it is not said and simply assumed or unneeded. www.piclist.com is the same as piclist.com is the same as alsdkjf.piclist.com but not all DNS servers allow that. Some (MS DNS is a good example of a horrible DNS damon) have to have an entry for each and every subdomain. Subdomains allow one domain to host many servers or can be used as shortcuts to different content. I'm not sure piclist.com members know that you can go to http://.piclist.com and be redirected to their home page. E.g. I am jmn-efp-786 and http://jmn-efp-786.piclist.com goes to my home page. > Personally I find "www" irritating - maybe they could've gone > with "web", or nothing at all. I notice now that more people > don't use it and simply say whatever.com unless it's an http. > There's another question - why http:// and not www in some cases ? http:// is ALWAYS required, but is often assumed and/or filled in by the browser or other software. Http is the protocol used to transport HTML or other web documents. Other examples would be telnet: mailto: or ftp: --- James Newton: PICList webmaster/Admin mailto:jamesnewton@piclist.com 1-619-652-0593 phone http://www.piclist.com/member/JMN-EFP-786 PIC/PICList FAQ: http://www.piclist.com -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
