If they do soft turn-on, I hope they do not do it with PWM to directly drive the LED. I already see artifacts of flickering break lights some cars have which makes the break lights appear to be somewhere they are not (like in the yard next to me, right in front of me when they are in the next lane over) when I quickly move my eyes. And when I drive, I tend to quickly move my eyes a lot. I get the same thing with the strobe lights on towers.
