It depends to some degree on the "use" of the LED...

Is the LED for lighting application ?
Then you'd probably need some external driver.

Or is it used as "indicator" (on a front panel or something) ?
Then you need only a few mA's (with good quality LEDs).

So the question is, why do you need to run the LED
close to it's max ?
