BOR is set in the fuse word but if there is a point where funny things can start happening before reset - particularly if too much power is being sucked out the DIO ports drawing down the voltage it could explain things. I am learning more as I read the source. Looks like it isn't EEPROM after all. The program reads the EEPROM values only at boot and writes it only when commanded.
