I have not tested all the of the SPI modes but mode 1,1 is BROKEN!
Many other combinations of Slave select and TRISC make it impossible to use
in a multi-slave SPI environment.

I initiated trouble ticket 1-35138.
After several rounds and weeks they finally had to admit there are several
problems, calling for a re-spin of the silicon by May.
(Believe that date at your own risk...)

I had this SAME difficulty with the 18C452, and the 18F452.
They have bad modes...
