Well, the only real convenience of a 4-digit multiplexed display
is that the segments are hard-wired internally. Available on the
pins are the segments and digit selects. You can make exactly
the same thing with 4 x 1-digit LEDs by doing your own wiring,
and add two round LEDs for the colon and any others for DPs
and annunciators (with a suitable mask or light pipe)
