Hey, how about printing dark spots on transparencies, then feeding them 
past the phototransistors with a light behind.  (Some guy actually did 
this for a player marimba - story in the last issue of MAKE.)  The 
advantage is that you wouldn't need a computer once you'd printed out 
your master.

Or you could do the same thing, but punch holes in opaque paper.  Now 
where have I seen that idea before...
