The language decision should not be based on your anticipated contributors, but the application in mind. Your contributors will come from your user base, and there is no way to avoid that. Use what is familiar to your general user base, if anything. I have personally contributed to mostly Java stuff, but, have done PHP, Perl, C, raw SQL, and other things (JavaScript here on piclist), etc. For numbers that I would consider to be mostly meaningless, see: http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=160 Given those numbers, and scanning the list, it seems that most open source projects are (in order) 1. Java @ 17811 2. C++ @ 17570 3. C @ 16577 All with very close numbers, then a big drop to 4. PHP @ 13050 Another drop to 5. Perl @ 6430 And then the other 30 or so languages after that.
