For a first-bit-of-PICs group you could consider using a bootloader. If you port my ZPL over to a smaller 16F you can have a very cheap target circuit. IMHO starting with a bootloader makes sense if (both) - you must/want to buy the hardware - there is a real chance that after this you will not continue using PICs So I ask again: what is your adience, aim, etc? You should reason from there, not from a hardware choice.
