No, but if you look at how a mechanicl ignition works, you just have a lump on a shaft that opens and closes the points. With electonic ignition the lump is replaced with some kind of magnetic sensor that genrates a pulse once per hump, and an electronic switch that turns on and off in place of the mechanical points/switch.
