OK, let's say 10 years sharp...

That's 1 gear change aprox each 15 seconds, 24 hours a day,
365 days a year, during 10 years. Using the same gearbox ? :-)

Keeping a counter in RAM and copying to EEPROM regulary
(and probably saving to EEPROM on a power loss) ?

Using a Ramtron FRAM device ?
