Even building spamc and running a spamd on another box would be a bit much for a wrt54g, let alone running a full install of perl and spamassassin. :) We're talking 22MB RSS for spamd running on an old mail gateway, which is a little lighter than spamassassin would be. DSpam is also too large. Can the open wrt54g system use swap over NFS/CIFS?
