I'm about 1.5 to 2 hours south of LA, but I work in Temecula which is about 1 hour south on the 415/I-15 (eastern freeways which run north/south) LA has a word class aquarium, an ok science museum and probably a lot more I don't know about. Look for a local Fry's Electronics as that is worth the trip.
