I'm not sure this is how it works. There seems to be a tendency to get into strange fights ('flame wars') that are typical for public exchanges. This type of behavior seems to be less likely in a 1-to-1 communication, even if it's still not eye-to-eye. So I think there may be good reasons to take certain issues offlist into a private conversation.
