Thanks, that does help. I was probably putting too much stock in the Online status. I still don't get it to work, but it may have to do with I forgot to close down the gui on the PC at work. Then check that the cable asserts DCD when the remote asserts CTS. You may have to put in a jumper. The DCD sets the 'Online' flag in minicom. You can still use it without DCD (and even without handshake) but the 'Online' flag will stay off. As it should. The remote carrier sense is the only thing that indicates that the link is connected.
