from this, i assume that you've got a modem connected to your serial port and 
you'd like to use minicom to go online (ie the Net).. that's not what minicom 
was meant for..

you need to get PPP to dial up to your ISP.. for that, you can use wvdial or 
something else.. it was probably what your GUI interfaced to anyway.. once 
you're online.. if you want to browse, you can use a text mode browser, like 
links or lynx.. and use a whole host of other text mode tools like email, 
news readers, instant messengers..

if you want to use minicom to go online, you can technically connect to your 
modem, and connect to your ISP by using the AT commands and dialing in and 
logging in.. but then you'd probably need to speak PPP to understand what's 
going on..
