Thanks all for the replies. A few of you suggested off-the-shelf solutions, 
but where's the fun in that? I like to learn things from my projects, so now 
I'm reading about opto-triacs and transformlerless power supplies. (Found a 
great Microchip app note:

Even hearing that a relay is an acceptable option was useful information, so
