make world would make everything not just the kernel! There are two ways to build a kernel. Old way is to copy the GENERIC file to SOMEKERNEL, edit SOMEKERNEL and use following commands (in proper directories): config make dep; make; make install Both the ways are mentioned here http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/kernelconfig-building.html I use the old quick and dirty way to make and install the kernel.
