Consider discrete sender receiver and put on a pcb with a 10mm gap ! or use
one of the reflective switches they work from one side

Its obvious but simple

Hey guys and gals,
I need to find a few slot opto interrupters with at least a 8 mm gap (10
would be better). The ones I've found so far seem to be 5 mm or less.

Suggestions?
