Phone GPS generally has little processing power on board. Most of the work is done by the cell site using timing info sent by the phone, so position is not really user accessible. I looked into this at length when a local store had refurbished 'GPS' phones on sale for $25.00. Without the cell site processing, the GPS info simply doesn't exist. Remember that CDMA and TDMA (GSM) need very precise timing, so the phone just needs to report the time stamps it gets from the GPS satellites, and need do nothing more sophisticated.
