Which ProMate? There are Promate I/II/III and I have only used the Promate II/III. They are of course quite good since they are Microchip's top-of-the-line programmer. Promate I is no longer sold and supported. Promate II is no longer sold. Promate III is the current model but the cost is not cheap. The socket modules for Promate II/III is not cheap as well. Promate II has a separated ICSP module. Promate III has the ICSP module built-in. I will tend to guess that this will not be a good buy without the necessary socket modules. Olin's ProProg might be a better buy if the chips you are using are supported by it. But I've never used it.
