I recently downloaded and installed the student version of the C30 
compiler (and also the C18 compiler) on my Windows XP computer.  One of 
the questions asked during the installation was whether or not I wanted 
it to set the PATH variables, and I said yes.

Now, when using the command-line windows, I cannot use commands such as 
"edit."  I checked the PATH variable, and things look ok, but something 
is wrong because it is not checking C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 which is where 
the edit.com program is.  (I  cannot access any of  those programs, in 
fact, such as ping). 

Does anyone know how to change the PATH variable?  I know that you can 
do a "set PATH=" while in the command-line window, but that disappears 
when you exit the window.  I need to change it in a registry somewhere, 
I suspect.  I tried Windows Help and they said to go to the control 
panel->system->advanced and change the environmental variable PATH.  I 
tried that, and it didn't change anything.  Also tried to find something 
on Google, and couldn't.  It certainly does seem to be a well kept secret.
