(Note that yor 6V battery is likely to be slightly too low a voltage - the regulator will (has to, in fact) throw away a certain voltage in order to do its job, so it's poosible that, when running from the battery, your SX-key isn't getting the 5V it needs. While yiou're chasing all sorts of other problems, I'd strongly recommmend you make everything that _is_ under your control as good as possible, and supply voltage definitely counts...)
