You pay $$$ for a compiler/library, that's the cost that the author has decided to set. For GPL software, the cost is not money. The cost is that code that uses GPL software must be relased under the same GPL. If this cost is unacceptable to you, don't use it. However, unlike a purchased compiler/library, if you don't like the cost, you can still look at the code and take ideas.
