I just posted the following to the MR2 & MR2SC lists. That's the "correct" forum but there may well be PICListers who are more expert. I have a ye olde 1989 MR2SC (ie supercharger model). When circumstances permit me to do so 'sensibly' and 'safely' I like to drive it to and beyond its handling limits, but straight line speed is not a major issue. Perhaps 120 kph (maybe very very very seldom 130 kph) (75/80 mph) while overtaking would be the upper limit. But given a suitable winding country road with good visibility and safe exit lines I like to push it to its handling limit. This is easily enough achievable within our speed limits in appropriate areas. Equally, on trips with my wife I value all the road holding I can achieve for safety's sake - we get nowhere near the car's handling limits when she's aboard :-). SO - within a sensible budget I'm looking for new front tyres. I'm not looking for new suggestions but for comments on two known types and certain tyre size combinations on the available rims. As US and NZ tires (and no doubt NZ and UK tyres) are often different in model my question relates to certain types which are common to the NZ and US market (Toyo T1S & T08 and the Bridgestone Grid 3). Anyone here who feels qualified (or willing :-)) to comment is most welcome to hold forth on the subject on or off list as they deem appropriate. RM ==================================== OK - Christmas is here. New Zealand country roads call. Time to actually buy some new rubber. Due to the heaps of good but conflicting advice received I'm PROBABLY going to take the path of lesser resistance and buy Bridgestone Grid 3's. BUT see below - you have one last chance to change my mind :-). I have noted the range of good and bad comments about Grid 3'. Nothing like a practical learning experience. What I want is comment on two other options. I have the original 89-MR2SC 14" tear drop mags - 6" front and back (according to the markings on them). The local dealer is dead set on me fitting G3 185/60-R14's but he has G3 195/60-R14's at the same price and MANY people have suggested 195's on the front and up to 205's on the rear all on the standard rims. I'm highly tempted to go to the 195s in front now if they don't rub etc when fitted. The difference is small but quite clear visually. Rears are OK for now and what happens there later will depend on how good the front tires turn out to be. **** HOWEVER **** Nobody answered two of my prior questions (and nobody is obliged to of course) BUT if anyone feels they have highly relevant comment on either of these two questions please give it now. I'm in New Zealand so many Northern hemisphere offerings are not identifiably avail;able here. Hence my questions about two tires which are common to both realms (T1S & FO8). Aim is best possible (in price range) dry and wet cornering on winding roads. High speed straight line not a major issue. Good pitted, pot-holed, semi gravelled country road performance a bonus. Good life would be nice but is fully subservient to performance. I'd love to try the Toyo T1S but the only possibly fittable size available here is 195/45VR14. And they do have Toyo Proxes F08 in the original sizes but I have no idea how they compare. So the 2 questions are (shrunk versions of the original questions): 1. ... Toyo T1S ... for 14" rim only available in 195/45VR14. Rim size is shown as 6.00-7.50 inch. Inflated diameter is about 6% smaller than what I have on now. Thoughts on suitability??? 2. The Proxes F08 come in a much better range of 14" sizes How does the F08 rate in absolute terms and compared to the T1S? http://www.toyo.co.nz/f08_specs.htm The 185& 195/60R14 all look like they'd suit the rims and diameters range from identical to what I have now to +3% and +5%.
