True, but the phrase 'taking something propriatary' in this area does not mean that the original work somehow leaves the PD, but that you can change one letter (or even: change nothing), and use it in a product that is not PD at all. Like Apple did for parts of OS/X. You can do that with PD and BSD software, but not with GPL software.
