?  Not knowing why, byt I was once thinking on using several transistors in series.
The hard point is driving them balanced so they take shared voltage evenly.  
Basically each transistor have its own isolated driver.

(I eventually found a single transistor capeable of full voltage so I did not build that solution)

Other than that, maybe a valve is better?
