I am using the dsPIC30F2010 quadrature encoder interface (QEI) with a US Digital optical encoder and have finally worked the bug out of my code. The QEI work great and has programmable filtering for the encoder inputs. Some of the 18F parts incluse the QEI as well. Just an FYI.
