Cisco's tech support is excellent -- someone should have called them when that happened. They probably would have been able to fix it or recommend a solution. (They're not perfect, but Cisco is still a customer-focused company -- people complain about their prices, but they do support their product, unlike many of the other networking product vendors. I've seen Cisco techs help people who should have never been anywhere near a network or switch system design (no training, no clue) through getting it set up and working -- not only working, but set up correctly with reasonable settings for security-related items, etc... all in a day's work for them, I guess.)
