You might feel more comfortable in Ubuntu if you are at all accustomed to the way dpkg/apt works or Knoppix's general layout. SUSE has good and bad points, and opensuse is just as low cost as Ubuntu, but the farther away from RPM you can stay, the better. RPM's only nice when it works. Get something messed up, or decide you want to install some stuff from a network repository, and RPM will show you how half-arsed it really is. The software seletion is pretty comparable, too, though you'll need to enable universe and multiverse in /etc/apt/sources.lst. Just FYI. If SuSE has a compelling argument for you, by all means, use it. If you're just looking for an easier "permanent" alternative to Knoppix, Ubuntu might fit the bill better. If you want more flexibility than apt gives you, an RPM-based distro will be just as infuriating. Gentoo may well be a better choice there - but Gentoo isn't exactly a walk in the park to set up and maintain, and portage has its own quirks that get in ones way. :) --Danny -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
