The fact that I can archive threads and have them forever, on any computer I sit down to, is hard to beat. Also, let's look at the top-posting thread as an example: I just kept archiving it and archiving it. One click sent ALL prior messages to the archive. HOWEVER, and this happens to me often, due to "topic drift" in the thread, I may notice a response to a message that I would have liked to read (based on the little one-line blurb in the inbox window). I can then re-open that thread, go back and find the pertinent message, and follow just that message through the tangled mess of the rest of them. I was unconvinced about Gmail at first, but now that I've been using it, it'll take a lot of convincing for me to change clients for mailing list browsing.
