After being scared about the lousy quality of Japanese brands and Korean brands, I almost bought a Fisher & Paykel washing machine from local Havey Norman shop last year. Somehow the sales person mentioned that it is a bit fragile and I later decided to buy a European brand (Brandt). I like the Brandt washing machine much better than the previous Samsung. Generally speaking I think the European brands of home appliances are much more reliable. Philips may be an exception. My DVD player and TV are from Philips but they are not up to its European quality.
