Unfortunately I don't know the dsPIC demo board but: 2 wires + 1 protective ground = RS485 half duplex. 4 wires + 2 protective grounds = RS485 full duplex. In some short connections the protective ground may miss. If you need both USART and RS485 there is way to use RS485 under software (assuming the dsPIC does not have two USARTs).
