subject: [OT] Which one is "better" 110 or 220? Wow, this thread has rambled about a bit, so I don't mind dumping my little bit into it. In the USA, the numbers are 120 Volts and 240 Volts - sort of. We have two hot wire for a single phase ciricuit; each is 120 V to the grounded neutral. They are of opposite polarity (from a transformer's/generator's tapped winding) so you can get 240 Volts line-to-line, though only 120 Volts to ground. Unless you are insulated above ground, and have ahold of the one line, there is no easy way to get 240 Volts across your body from this service. One time I backed into a 480 Volt line, way up on a bridge crane. Yes, dropped my tools, did not fall off. 480 Volts? Only 277 Volts to ground. (Plenty!) BTW, the lower Voltages of three phase here tends to be: *120 Volts to neutral, 208 Volts line-to line (120 Y 208). *240 Volts line-to-line, 120 Volts, 208 Volts, 120 Volts to ground (120 240 four-wire delta). *277 Volts to neutral, 480 Volts line-to line (277 Y 480).
