 You might want to consider buying Mike Predko's book titled ...

 "123 PIC Microcontroller Experiments For The Evil Genius".


 This whole book is based on the 16F648 which is a 14 pin part,
 but the experiments and code should work virtually unmodified 
 on the 648, (which IIRC is an 18 pin part).  It a good book, 
 it's relatively inexpensive, (I've seen it listed online for <$18.00).
 And it could help you out immensely. Have fun and good luck.
