Where email is sent to a large audience with unknown capabilities it is usually wise (and polite) to target the lowest common denominator and send plain text. Even in such situations it may *occasionally* be useful to use eg html due to some added feature even though this means that a few receive garbage. The need needs to be suitably dire. BUT when sending email between persons/systems of known capability, html and other 'formats' can greatly add to the utility of the message and it's up to those concerned to agree on an acceptable standard. Telling people that they MUST use plain text in such cases is without compelling reason. One may not like the 'waste" of bandwidth or lack of undesired universality or the uncouth nature of the medium, but there is no absolute reason, apart from religious fervour, to believe that plain text is the only acceptable format.
