The To header of the messages you received goes probably something like
this (broken in two lines):

  To: "Microcontroller discussion list - Public." <piclist@mit.edu>, 
  John Nall <jwnall@gmail.com>

He (or his mail program) did a "reply to all", which replied both to the
real sender (the piclist) and the original sender (you).
